I had the pleasure of working with Matt Kunz on a very important Audio/Visual project for Saint Brendan the Navigator Parish in Cumming, Georgia.
We were struggling with creative artwork and AV production. Then we found Matt. My name is Matt Kunz, and I am a Catholic artist who was commissioned to paint over fifty paintings for my parish, Saint Brendan the Navigatory Catholic Church in Cumming, GA. That experience allowed me to grow my style and develop my processes. Now, I am painting scenes to inspire hope during our struggles and to maintain faith through our storms. I want to tell stories of courage, including those moments where we have to believe in the unseen to find our strength.

When the day is about over and night approaches, I look west and imagine an army of angels getting ready to come to defend God's faithful. This piece grew into an intense scene, with a small church bombarded by storms, yet above the threat comes the power of Heaven.

These two paintings came after an artistic journey I did not expect. After attending Mass daily for two months straight, I decided to change careers and focus solely on becoming an artist. I learned just how much our faith plays into the decisions we make, and how it's really the only way to live.

"Then war broke out in Heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon, and the dragon and his angels fought back." ~ Revelation 12: 7-9
Launching into my art career, I asked, "Who is the patron saint of artists?" To my surprise, Saint Michael was listed as one of the patron saints. This meant that I could ask for his help with being an artist. I thought it would be fitting to create a large painting dedicated to him.
So, I said, "Saint Michael, show me how you want to look in this painting." I went though some sketches, developed my plan, and went to work. A few surprises came. First, Saint Michael appeared not as a happy angel, but as an angel with an attitude. He's like an older brother coming to the defense of his little brothers and sisters, and he's not happy at whoever is causing trouble for them. Also, he has a beard, which was a surprise. Hey, if it works in art go with it!
The day after it was completed, I took it to my priest to have it blessed. Next, I brought it to a friend's house for him to look at it. He was not Catholic, but he liked the painting. I carried the painting back to my car. Before I sat in the driver's seat, my friend received a call. "I found a book in my basement," the caller said. "You wrote an inscription inside it."
"I did?" my friend said. "What did I say?"
"You wrote, 'Irish angels are smiling on you.' And you made the book out to someone named Michael."
My friend's jaw dropped. I had just shown him a painting of Saint MIchael, and not thirty seconds later he was getting a message that had to do with someone named Michael. My friend couldn't sleep that night. The next morning, he sent me an email telling me the story and asking me to call him because he didn't know what to think about it.
I told him that Saint Michael is very real, and this painting is a way to remind us that he's ready to help us when we call on him.

For those of us who know, faith involves both interior and exterior struggles. With Saint Michael hanging obove my art table, I asked how I could inspire others who wish to strengthen their faith.
I had an idea. I learned as a child to love sunsets. It wasn't just because of the colors. For some reason, I often imagined a host of angels standing on the clouds of Heaven behind the light. They were preparing to come to help us at any moment. I first imagined this scene when I was three years old, and on many occasions I still do.
I prayed again for an idea of how best to show this scene. I sketched some ideas, made my plan, and went to work. During the process, something shifted, and I realized there needed to be the storm that threatens faith. Often when we pray there's danger overhead, and it's right at the door. Those who criticize the faithful often say we're not looking at reality, that we have to deal with the storm. But they miss the point. As members of the body of Christ, we are very aware of the storm, but we are also aware that Heaven has a greater power. We don't just see the storm; we see the greater glory!
When painting this piece, I felt this scene becoming more and more powerful. I added loads of paint to express the heaviness of the storm, while bringing light to the angels and Heaven above. It has affected me more than I anticipated.
Now, when I have doubts about my struggles, I look at this painting and remember that there is a greater power above my problems. We must look past the storm, for it is there that we will grow our faith.

ABOUT MATT KUNZ
Matt Kunz is a visual storyteller. He drew pictures of dinosaurs, horses, and dragons as a child. He was first published in Nevada Young Writer's Magazine when he was eleven years old. The following summer, he took creative writing courses at UNLV where he wrote stories and plays. In high school he filmed several skits with his friends for class projects.
He is a graduate of the University of Notre Dame where he played football for the Fighting Irish.
He and his wife, RaDonna, were confirmed and married together at the Cathedral of Christ the King in Atlanta, GA.
Matt was a lector and Eucharistic minister before he ran for City Council in Milton, GA. He won his election and served for eight years, creating parks and programs like the Arts Committee and the Equestrian Committee to make the city the best place to live in the state. While on the council he communicated regularly with citizens using YouTube videos.
He is a self-published author, having written several books, both fiction and non-fiction. He is also creating films using today's A.I. technology.
While writing his sequel to his Loch Ness series, Matt picked up a pencil, drawing sketches and posting them online.
Others took notice, which led to charcoal and eventually watercolor classes with a local teacher.
That led to a commission by Saint Brendan the Navigator Catholic Church, where he painted fifty paintings and made a movie about the Saint with his artwork.
